On the Couch with Michael Trauffer

AAR Michael Trauffer photo by Georgina Bolton KingWho is Michael Trauffer?
A Swiss-British writer, composer and performer creating solo musical theatre rooted in queer history, law, and lived experience.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I don’t think about doing things differently so much as doing them more deliberately, with clearer boundaries and priorities.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by artists who engage seriously with history and politics while still allowing space for vulnerability, humour, and musicality – and by people who have opinions without being opinionated.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
By telling stories that bring marginalised histories into the present and invite audiences to reflect on how those histories are still relevant now, and will be in the future.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Right now: Australia – because I’m here, and I’ll be travelling for a few weeks after the Fringe.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Somewhere that gives a sense of the place rather than a checklist sight.

What are you currently reading?
The Adelaide Fringe programme.

What are you currently listening to?
A blend of rehearsal tracks and deliberate quiet, while trying to enjoy the beauty of Australia.

Happiness is?
A sense of alignment; between what is happening and what I want to happen.

What does the future hold for you?
Continuing to develop new work, share it internationally, and deepen the conversation between history, performance, and audiences.

Michael is the writer and performer of The Pink List – which will be presented at the Holden Street Theatres, as part of the Adelaide Fringe, from 20 February – 8 March 2026. For more information, visit: www.holdenstreettheatres.com for details.
