The Force is Strong – Star Wars: A New Hope comes to life with WASO

WASO presents Star Wars A New HopeA long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Star Wars changed cinema forever. Now, 50 years after George Lucas’ groundbreaking film first captivated audiences around the world, West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) invites Perth audiences to celebrate this landmark anniversary with Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert.

In 2027, WASO will perform John Williams’ unforgettable score live as the complete film is projected onto a giant screen at the Riverside Theatre, creating an immersive cinematic experience that brings the magic of the original Star Wars to life like never before.

Released in 1977, Star Wars: A New Hope became an instant cultural phenomenon and launched one of the most enduring franchises in cinematic history. Follow Luke Skywalker as he begins a journey that will change the galaxy as he leaves his home planet, battles the evil Empire, and learns the way of the Force.

At the heart of the film’s enduring legacy is John Williams’ extraordinary score. From the instantly recognisable opening fanfare to the sweeping themes of the Force, Princess Leia, and the Imperial March, Williams’ music has become as iconic as the film itself.

The score won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1978 and was named the greatest American film score of all time by the American Film Institute in 2005. WASO’s film concerts have proved hugely popular with Perth audiences, combining the thrill of a cinematic blockbuster with the power and excitement of a live orchestra.

As the film plays on the giant screen above the musicians, WASO performs the entire soundtrack live, allowing audiences to experience every note of Williams’ masterpiece in all its orchestral glory. Subtitles are included on screen so audiences can follow the dialogue without intruding on the music.

Leading this special 50th anniversary performance is acclaimed Australian conductor and Perth podium favourite, Jessica Gethin. Renowned for her dynamic and engaging approach to orchestral music, Gethin has conducted orchestras and opera companies around the world and is thrilled to return to conduct WASO in this spectacular celebration of one of cinema’s most beloved films.

So, dust off your lightsabers, climb aboard the Millennium Falcon, and prepare to experience the Force as WASO celebrates 50 years of Star Wars with this unforgettable intergalactic musical adventure.

May the Force be with you!
