Who is Sunitra Martinelli?
An Adelaide-based creative who thrives on storytelling through music and performance, with a passion for celebrating female empowerment. Francophiles of Adelaide may know me as the leader of French jazz band Mélange à Trois and French Latino/fusion band Mélange Latino. I’m thrilled to be part of State Theatre SA’s HOUSEWORK, a humorous and engaging exploration of humanity.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’ve worn many hats – fashion designer, stylist, musician, and mother to four. Much of my work has been self-initiated, managing everything from planning to production. I’m eager to collaborate more in music and theatre. Working with talented teams will elevate my projects, allowing me to focus on creativity while ensuring my music and stories are brought to life in their best form.
Who inspires you and why?
Creative, strong women. Right now I’m bringing prolific author Emily ‘Mickey’ Hahn’s fearless spirit to life in a 1 woman bio-cabaret. In 1924, aged 19, she drove across America dressed as a man, with a pistol under her seat. Hahn never waited for societal acceptance; she charged ahead, learning through action and thriving despite criticism. Her resilience reminds me to keep creating, embrace imperfection, and push forward boldly.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Ban the offshore sale of vital resources like water and power – essentials that should serve Australian communities first. It’s devastating to see families and small businesses struggle because these resources are privatised and overpriced.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Chiang Dao, Thailand – it’s tranquil, unspoiled, and alive with the sounds of nature.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Sellicks Beach – it’s vast stretch of sand, sea, and sky feel like a gift of serenity.
What are you currently reading?
The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, very slowly, because it makes me anxious! It’s a thought-provoking dive into how social media impacts younger generations.
What are you currently listening to?
Recordings of my lines for Housework on repeat! Music that inspires my songwriting for GRIT TO GLITZ: 1930’s jazz, Swahili chants, Argentinian tango, Chinese opera. And before sleeping – calming forest, bird and nature sounds.
Happiness is?
Exploring Thailand with my family – soaking in nature’s beauty, discovering hidden eateries, and feeling connected to a simpler, joyful way of life.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m excited to perform in Housework (Feb 7–22) with State Theatre SA. Afterwards, I’ll focus on expanding my one woman show GRIT TO GLITZ. I aspire to collaborate with an Australian theatre company and tour it nationally.
Sunitra can be seen in Housework by Emily Steel – which will be presented by State Theatre Company South Australian in the Dunstan Playhouse – Adelaide Festival Centre from 7 – 22 February 2025. For more information, visit: www.statetheatrecompany.com.au for details.
