There is an irresistible sense of fun about James Terry Collective’s production of High School Musical, currently playing at the National Theatre St Kilda. Directed by James Terry, this impressively realised production delivers an energetic and highly entertaining take on one of Disney’s most enduringly popular teen musicals.
Based on Disney Channel’s hugely successful 2006 television movie, High School Musical became a global phenomenon, introducing audiences to Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale and spawning a franchise that continues to resonate with a new generation.
The stage musical retains the familiar story of Troy Bolton, a high-school basketball star, and Gabriella Montez, a gifted new student whose shared love of music brings them together. Their decision to audition for the school musical challenges the established social groups, encouraging their classmates to reconsider their assumptions and embrace their individuality.
It is a simple, feel-good story about friendship, individuality and breaking free from expectations, but in the hands of this spirited company, there is plenty of life in its familiar formula.
The production gets off to a confident start with Start of Something New, immediately establishing the bright, youthful energy that drives the evening. From Get’cha Head in the Game and Bop to the Top through to Breaking Free and the inevitable We’re All in This Together, the score delivers one crowd-pleasing number after another. The infectious combination of catchy pop melodies, lively choreography and a committed ensemble clearly delighted the opening-night audience.
Terry has assembled a stellar cast, with Gabriel Tiller bringing an appealing combination of charisma and vulnerability to Troy Bolton, while Sophia Kouknas makes a warm and engaging Gabriella. Meg Williams embraces the larger-than-life persona of Sharpay Evans with considerable relish, matched by Josh Gates as her equally entertaining brother Ryan.
Adam-Jon Fiorentino makes a strong impression as Coach Bolton, with Chelsea Plumley bringing her considerable comic and theatrical instincts to Ms Darbus. Massimo Zuccara is an energetic Chad Danforth, while Rufaro Zimbudzi brings warmth and personality to Taylor McKessie.
Sarah Wood gives Kelsi Nielsen an appealing presence, while Evan Evans as Zeke Baylor, Lachie Beck as Jack Scott and Ella Spiniello as Martha Cox each make their mark. They are supported by a highly talented ensemble, whose commitment gives the production much of its momentum.
Behind the performers is an accomplished creative team. Harry Gill’s design immediately establishes the world of East High, while providing a versatile framework for the action as it moves seamlessly between its various locations. Sophie Duffus (Head of Wardrobe) and James Terry (Costume Stylist) complete the visual picture with costumes that complement the production’s youthful aesthetic.
Jason Bovaird’s lighting design adds energy and atmosphere, while Marcello Lo Ricco’s sound ensures the vocals and music remain crisp and well balanced. David Youings leads a tight-knit band that keeps the score moving with considerable verve, providing a strong musical foundation for the cast and ensemble.
The choreography by Issy Fox and Callum Marshall is another highlight, capturing the youthful exuberance and physicality of the material. Get’cha Head in the Game is particularly impressive, with its sharp, athletic choreography and dynamic ensemble work making it one of the evening’s standout numbers.
What makes this High School Musical work so well is its wholehearted embrace of the material. There is no attempt to overcomplicate the story or apologise for its unabashed optimism. Instead, Terry and his company understand precisely what audiences have come to this musical for: big personalities, infectious songs, energetic dancing and a generous dose of feel-good theatricality.
High School Musical is a bright, spirited and thoroughly entertaining production, delivering feel-good appeal with considerable style and energy.
