On the Couch with Shane Anthony

Shane Anthony AAR On the CouchWho is Shane Anthony?
I’m a theatre director based in Sydney and I’m currently directing The Inheritance by Matthew Lopez.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I were to do something different, I think pursuing a career in architecture would be fascinating. I imagine there would be something incredibly rewarding about designing spaces that shape the way people live and interact with the world around them.

I’m drawn to the idea of creating environments that tell a story, much like theatre, but with physical structures that can be experienced in a completely different way. The crossover between art, function, and human experience in architecture feels like a natural extension of what I already love about directing.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by artists who aren’t afraid to push boundaries – directors like Ivo van Hove, Katie Mitchell and Anne Bogart, and other artists like Taylor Mac, David Byrne, James Baldwin and Es Devlin, who constantly reimagine what theatre and art can be. Their work is endlessly imaginative and innovative, always asking tough questions.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Use storytelling as a way to foster empathy. The stories we tell through the arts hugely impact and shape our collective consciousness and can profoundly fuel faith in humanity. The stories we tell are tools used to hold up a mirror to society in the hope for positive change, improved understanding of and compassion for our one another.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s hard to pick just one but staying at Villa Feltrinelli in Italy a few years ago must be one of the more magical experiences. The hotel, once Mussolini’s residence, is stunning, right on Lake Garda. The design, food, and service were exceptional, and the company was fantastic – a decadent, magical experience that stands out.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d take them on the Bondi to Bronte cliff walk. It’s such a stunning experience – being outdoors with that evolving, spectacular scenery. The combination of the coastline’s beauty, the ocean views, and the fresh air makes it the perfect introduction to Sydney. Plus, it’s a great way to slow down and connect.

What are you currently reading?
Trust by Hernan Diaz. It’s a fascinating exploration of wealth, power, and truth. The layered storytelling is brilliantly done.

What are you currently listening to?
I tend to listen to an eclectic variety of music. On regular rotation are Radiohead, Florence and the Machine, some Lorde. Lately, I’ve also been diving into classical Romantic composers – a personal favourite but also part of my research for The Inheritance. The ‘work out’ playlist is another thing altogether and a complete departure from the above.

Happiness is?
Being surrounded by good friends, good food, and a project simmering away that I’m passionate about. Also, sneaking in some time by the ocean!

What does the future hold for you?
I’m really excited about the year ahead. The Inheritance opens soon at the Seymour Centre, and after that I’ll begin rehearsing another exciting work for Adelaide Festival (soon to be announced). At the start of 2025, I’m stepping into a role new for the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts as Head of Acting.

I’m hugely excited to be working with the Acting department at WAAPA (the team is exceptional!) and recognise the deep privilege to guide the training for a new generation of young artists.

Shane is the director of The Inheritance by Matthew Lopez – which will be presented at the Seymour Centre from 7 – 30 November 2024. For more information, visit: www.seymourcentre.com for details.
