Who is Holland Brooks?
I am an American-Australian writer, director and stage manager. My work and practice currently centralize the under-utilized genre of queer fabulism – a term coined by the visionary academic Kit Haggard. Queer fabulism is a genre that borrows elements from science fiction, speculative fiction, horror and gothic to abstract the queer experience in ways that resist cisheteronormative storytelling and bring real magic to our stories.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I’m feeling really fulfilled and excited about what I’m up to artistically! Currently I’m trying to find a really solid work-life balance; making the time and space to observe the world around me, to fuel my creativity.
Who inspires you and why?
Junji Ito – his propensity for showing the endless perseverance of love and hope despite unfathomable horror is unmatched. Uzumaki was a life-changing read for me. Also highly recommend Tomie. But be warned, they are not for the faint of heart!
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I feel it is incredibly important to stay informed, aware and very active in politics – local, national and international. Using your voice to speak out and your body to resist is the first step towards making a difference.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s gotta be the bush! Love bushwalking, hiking and spending time in nature.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
PICA or The Blue Room Theatre for sure. Perth’s independent arts scene is so vibrant and there’s always something interesting to engage with.
What are you currently reading?
Whipping Girl by Julia Serano.
What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been really enjoying Etta Marcus’ music at the minute! Theatre and Mechanical Bull are top plays for me.
Happiness is?
Kindness.
What does the future hold for you?
Lots of exciting original theatre, interesting new people, and constantly changing, responding and evolving to a dynamic world.
Holland is the Playwright of Unnatural – which will be presented at Perth’s The Blue Room Theatre from 5 – 23 November 2024. For more information, visit: www.blueroom.org.au for details.
