Ben-Anderson-with-Double-Belled-Trombone-photo-Xander-SanbrookAustralia’s first composition competition for queer composers, applications are now open for 2nd annual Homophonic! Pride Prize!

Created with the support of philanthropist Andrew Boyle, the selected artist will be commissioned to compose a work for solo Bass Trombone to be premiered by Ben Anderson at Homophonic! in early 2021. The competition is in memory of Annette Cawcut, an artist, and great lover of music.

Ben has developed the worlds’ first double belled bass trombone and is inviting composers to write for this exciting new instrument!

“I am thrilled to be the instrumentalist for the 2020 Homophonic! Pride Prize for Composition,” said Ben Anderson. Homophonic! is a highlight of my musical calendar each year, whether I am performing or have the good fortune to be an audience member.”

“It is such a fantastic celebration of the breadth of talented composers in the queer community, and I am really excited that I will be able to work with one of the next generation on a new piece.”

Homophonic! is a riotous yearly celebration of the music written by queer composers, led by Artistic Director Miranda Hill, and co-presented by La Mama theatre as part of Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival. 2021 will be the 10th annual production. It’s the only classical chamber music concert with a cult following!

“As a queer artist, it is my greatest joy to give back to our community in this way,” said Miranda Hill. “The arts and the LGBTIQ+ community have always gone hand in hand, and through Homophonic! and the Pride Prize we are working to celebrate and continue the legacy of the trailblazing queer musicians and composers who shaped the artistic world we now enjoy.”

The winner will receive a $1000 commissioning fee plus 3 sessions with Bass Trombonist Ben Anderson, performance at Homophonic! 2021, and a professional live audio and video recording of the work.

Applications for 2nd Homophonic! Pride Prize! are now open and close Friday 26 June 2020. For more information and entry guidelines, visit: www.3shadesblack.com for details.
