Who is Bernie Dieter?
Cabaret siren, professional troublemaker, and the deliciously debaucherous curator of the sinful playground that is Club Kabarett.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I wasn’t seducing audiences under the spotlight, I’d be unravelling them on a therapist’s couch, probably as a sex therapist. Humans are gloriously strange creatures, especially when the lights go out… and I’ve always adored a good peek behind the curtain.
Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by performance rebels like Taylor Mac and Marina Abramović. They don’t just perform, they expose. There’s something dangerously intimate about what they do. Taylor Mac’s 24-hour odyssey through music and Marina’s fearless surrender in Rhythm 0. Utterly raw, confrontational, and unforgettable. That’s the kind of art that can really leave a mark.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Darling, if I can give people one night to shed their skin, drink too much, flirt outrageously, and feel wildly alive, then I’ve done my bit. A little hedonism can be a radical act. Sometimes the best way to fight the darkness is with sequins, sweat, and a room full of beautiful misfits.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Somewhere cold, remote, and deliciously indulgent. Think snow falling outside, a roaring fire within, bodies draped in velvet and fur, and far too much wine. I’m practically allergic to the sun – give me moonlight, mischief, and a hot tub full of bad decisions.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Straight to Luna Park, obviously. Nothing like a creepy ghost train to set the mood. Then we head into the laneways for a decadent crawl of cocktails, carbs, and questionable choices. Melbourne knows how to feed your vices properly.
What are you currently reading?
I’ve just finished reading Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung. It’s twisted, grotesque, and utterly delicious. I loved it.
What are you currently listening to?
David Bowie, Nick Cave, or Amyl and the Sniffers, played loud enough to wake the neighbours. Subtlety is overrated.
Happiness is?
A table full of friends, bottles that keep appearing, and absolutely nowhere to be tomorrow. Bliss.
What does the future hold for you?
Who knows? And isn’t that the thrill of it? But I’d love to unleash Club Kabarett onto a few more unsuspecting corners of the world… spread a little beautiful chaos where it’s most needed.
