On the Couch with James Clayton

James Clayton AAR On the CouchWho is James Clayton?
James Clayton is a husband, a father, a handyman, a musician and a singer.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I would stop and smell the roses even more than I do and not sweat the small stuff – it’s just not worth it.

Who inspires you and why?
People who work in service jobs – they have to deal with adversity and mess every day, and yet they often do it with a smile on their face and a spring in their step.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Unite everyone in love and compassion for one another.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I know it might sound strange but – home! My favourite thing to do is have a “staycation”. I can do all the things that I want. I sleep in my own bed and just relax and look at the view of the valley from our house in Bridgetown.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
There is so much to choose from in the South West of WA, but if I had to choose one it would be Yeagarup Sand Dunes. The journey there through Karri forests near Pemberton and the location itself is breathtaking.

What are you currently reading?
The Greatest Story Ever Told by Bear Grylls.

What are you currently listening to?
Mostly La Traviata as I’m learning it, however I love listening to Wagner, Janàček, Mozart and also a lot of contemporary music. My taste in music is very eclectic.

Happiness is?
My wife and I sitting on our swing seat together at the golden hour looking at our stunning view, perhaps even occasionally with a drink in hand.

What does the future hold for you?
Who knows. I think after the craziness of Covid, we’ve all learned to be in the present a lot more and enjoy what we have right now. As far as performances, I have several bookings for 2026 and beyond that I will have to see what opens up!

James stars as Giorgio Germont in West Australian Opera’s production of La Traviata, which will play at Perth’s His Majesty’s Theatre from 14 – 28 March 2026. For more information, visit: www.waopera.asn.au for details.
