Who is Guanqun Yu?
I’m an opera singer from China. My life’s all about travelling the world and bringing different characters to life on stage. And when I’m not doing that, I love helping others find their own voices too.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Well, when I was a kid, I actually imagined I’d become a scientist because I liked working quietly on my own. And honestly, I also love food, so maybe in another life I could have been a chef. But I’ve found that I can bring that same creativity into what I do now, and I’m happy where I ended up.
Who inspires you and why?
It’s hard to pick just one person, but someone like Maria Callas really inspires me. She was so faithful to the music, down to every dynamic and tempo marking, and she wasn’t afraid to make an “ugly” sound if the character needed it. She never put herself above the music, and that’s something I really admire.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I don’t think I can change the whole world, but if I can give someone three hours in an opera house where they forget the outside world and just bathe in the music and the story, then I’ve made a difference. I want to share those little moments of magic and connection.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Honestly, right now it’s just being home for Chinese New Year. I haven’t been able to spend that holiday in China for years, and this year I finally can. It’s the place that feels the most special right now.
When friends come into town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
If we’re in Paris, I’d take them to my favourite museum and a lovely restaurant. It’s all about sharing those little local gems and giving them a taste of the culture.
What are you currently reading?
Right now, I’m diving back into Madama Butterfly.
What are you currently listening to?
I’m also listening to a beautiful album called Marais: La Rêveuse et autres pièces de viole. It’s been a lovely mix.
Happiness is?
My happiness is pretty simple: good food, time with people or animals I love, and seeing something beautiful. Those little moments are what make me happy.
What does the future hold for you?
I think the future is about entering a calmer, less fearful phase of my life. I’m understanding the world in a more relaxed way and looking forward to continuing my journey with music and opera – just checking off those dream roles and enjoying the ride.
