On the Couch with Emily Taheny

Emily Taheny AAR On the CouchWho is Emily Taheny?
If you come across the answer to that question could you please let me know?

What would you do differently from what you do now?
In the early years of my career I was singing in bands and writing songs so I probably would be doing that if I hadn’t been swept away with sketch comedy in the early 2000’s. I also had a stint in a juice bar and was fired for blowing up a blender shortly after completing a certificate at ‘Smoothie School’. Sliding Doors.

Who inspires you and why?
Female friends and artists who write and perform their own shows often with young families at home. They’re my heroes.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Sing to the elderly

Favourite holiday destination and why?
There’s a little beach in SA close to where I grew up. I can’t reveal the name or the locals will kill me. But it’s called Point Souttar. It’s picturesque and remote and there are no crowds.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Melbourne’s best asset is undoubtedly it’s live music scene – so I would usually take them to a music venue like The Union Hotel in Brunswick on a Sunday afternoon or The Gem on a Tuesday for some country music.

What are you currently reading?
I have just finished The Green Road by Anne Enright. I like bleak Irish family dramas that remind me of my childhood.

What are you currently listening to?
The new Mavis Staples album. It’s a ripper.

Happiness is?
Sometimes elusive so when it strikes, savour it. But for me it would be a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends listening to a country band or sitting by that beach I mentioned in SA with family and having a big old laugh and a crisp glass of something.

What does the future hold for you?
Seasonal unemployment no doubt… but in the NEAR future The Haunting of Spook Mansion (By Ghosts) at Chapel Off Chapel. Who will make it out alive?

Emily stars in The Haunting of Spook Mansion (By Ghosts) by Michael Ward – which will be presented at Chapel Off Chapel from 12 – 23 November 2025.
