On the Couch with Cassandra Seidemann

Cassandra Seidemann AAR On the CouchWho is Cassandra Seidemann?
I am an Australian/German mezzo soprano, actor, musician, educator, cosy gamer and cat mum.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I don’t think I’d change what I’m doing much at all. My career is extremely varied and I’m lucky enough to be involved in projects that cover most of my passions and interests. If I could add anything, it would be something to do with wildlife preservation and animal protection.

Who inspires you and why?
Voices from the past that were unique and characterful. People who aren’t afraid to be themselves, no matter the opinions of others. Most of all, people who bring joy to the lives of others, it’s not hard, it doesn’t hurt us and we should all aim to do this more.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Improve the education system and make it free to learn anything you desire. Knowledge really is power, not in a corrupt way, but in a way that allows individuals to make informed decisions about their own lives. This should be a right, not a privilege.

Imagine what a world we would have if people felt they could live with curiosity every day. Knowing that they were supported in their pursuit of knowledge, no matter their class, race, religion, beliefs or sexual preference.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I think it would have to be Germany, because I get to see my family. There’s the bonus of incredible art and culture, natural beauty, intriguing history and I think there’s a few castles to visit too. My heart is very full there.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Anywhere! Queensland is awesome! There’s so many places to take people, but I am a nature lover, so I’d probably just show that off. The rain forest of Mount Tambourine, or the beach at Currumbin.

We have koala habitats within 25mins of the city, so walking through any of the reserves is always a treat. A picnic in any of these places with good people, good food and a great sunset, equals a good day.

What are you currently reading?
The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, if you’re interested in quantum physics and biology, it’s worth the read. On the lighter side, I’m reading Still Life by Sarah Winman which is captivating and moving. It’s set in Italy, so the imagery is just beautiful.

What are you currently listening to?
At the moment it’s quite an eclectic mix. Gilbert and Sullivan is on repeat because of our upcoming show. I’m also loving Ben Folds Five, mixed with a bunch of film scores by Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer and a brilliant recording of Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett – The CBS Television Specials.

Happiness is?
The everyday pleasures. Time spent with my husband and cats, a good coffee and my garden.

What does the future hold for you?
It could be anything, and that is so exciting! I am known as a bit of a jump in, so it truly could be anything. Obviously, Gilbert and Sullivan: A Soiree of Song and Satire is coming up soon, then we have some Handel, some more film scores and possibly some Verdi. As long as I am bringing joy to people’s lives, I’d be happy with whatever the future holds.
