On the Couch with Jem Cresswell

Jem Cresswell AAR On the CouchWho is Jem Cresswell?
An underwater artist, photographer and filmmaker based in Sydney. Originally from South Australia. Professional procrastinator. Lover of coffee and sleep, though they rarely mix well.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Worry less about what people think of me.

Who inspires you and why?
The timeless portraits of African wildlife by Nick Brandt. Important work with so much depth and character. Aesthetically, Toni Frissell’s 1947 black and white image, Lady in the Water, shot at Weeki Wachee Spring in Florida.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Spread positivity, approach others with less judgment and share the beauty of this planet’s incredible creatures with as many people as possible.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
The Tuamotu Islands in Tahiti. Such raw untouched beauty alongside the perfect climate. Totally embrace the slower pace of island time, whilst still having the opportunity to dive with a myriad of aquatic life at each reef pass.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
A Bangarra Dance Theatre show at the Sydney Opera House. Intimate, powerful and like nothing else.

What are you currently reading?
Deep Water by James Bradley.

What are you currently listening to?
The Waves: Tuesday by Max Richter.

Happiness is?
My son’s smile as I lift him out of the cot each morning.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more quality time spent creating multidisciplinary work that celebrates the incredible marine life beneath the surface. There never seems to be enough time for all the ideas constantly flowing through my head.
