On the Couch with Mayu Iwasaki

Mayu Iwasaki AAR On the CouchWho is Mayu Iwasaki?
I am the daughter of a puppeteer from Tokyo, with a love for fragmented food and rice. I’ve been lucky enough to call Sydney home for over 18 years, and have also studied acting and worked in New York City – though I prefer Australia’s work–life balance. That said, finding it is another story… still working on it.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Not much, maybe I’d quit straightening my hair sooner – especially when auditioning for Japanese roles. I’ve actually had wavy hair since I was a baby, and turns out, messy curls work just fine. Who knew?

Who inspires you and why?
I find inspiration in everyday moments and even strangers, but recently I met Keiko Ogura, a Hiroshima survivor who shares my birthday. At 88, she’s lived through unimaginable trauma yet remains warm, energetic, and full of humour. Her endless drive to inspire change and her remarkable ability to connect with people worldwide through empathy and understanding is truly something else. Honestly, she’s 50 years older than me and still more energetic – so these days, I can’t really say I’m tired!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Create, produce, and perform in great theatre that connects people.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Miyazaki, Japan – it’s like stepping into the forest of Princess Mononoke. You can really feel the energy of nature… plus, the onsen there is absolutely the best.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
My Japanese high school best friend recently visited, and I took her to the Hunter Valley. I love road trips and bushwalks, but I also enjoy showing friends my local favourite, St Jude Café, because honestly, Australian coffee is just the best.

What are you currently reading?
Right now, my head is buried deep in the script of The Face of Jizo. Learning the original Japanese script, written in the Hiroshima dialect back in 1948, has been a new challenge. That said, before bed, I like to unwind with fantasy – I’m currently reading the third book of The Hunger Games.

What are you currently listening to?
I’m all about Awich – Japan’s fierce female rapper.

Happiness is?
Those tiny moments that make me giggle. I wish I could bottle them up – like the time I noticed how hairy my partner’s ear is!

What does the future hold for you?
After years of touring, I’m really enjoying being home in Sydney – staying busy working, creating, and writing with the people I love, and growing more veggies at home.

Mayu can be seen in The Face of Jizo by Hisashi Inoue – which will be presented at the Seymour Centre from 21 August – 6 September 2025. For more information, visit: www.seymour.com for details.
