On the Couch with Joel Bray

Joel Bray AAR On the CouchWho is Joel Bray?
Joel Bray is a choreographer and the SHE-E-O of Joel Bray Dance, who has parlayed a penchant for oversharing into an arts practice. He’s Wiradjuri and Queer. Like…very Queer.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
This is going to sound nuts, but I’m trying to spend more time on social media. I’m such a Luddite and social media is so foreign to me. But I want to reach new audiences, and bring them back to the delight of live performance. And social media is where people, and young people in particular, gather and connect with culture. So, right when everyone I know is trying to cap their daily social media usage at 15 minutes, I’m striving to hit fifteen minutes a day… lol.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by my Elders, in particular Uncle James Ingram from Wagga-Wagga who we sadly lost this year. His deep knowledge about Country and the stories connected to her was awe-inspiring. In terms of artists, I’m inspired by Emma Valente and Kate Davis from feminist theatre outfit The Rabble. Emma and Kate draft contemporary theatre that manages to push the artform forward, but somehow still bring audiences with them. It’s the kind of theatre we need.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’ve actually thought about this a lot! I would wrangle some money, buy a farm out on Wiradjuri Country that has been destroyed by Colonial farming methods and rewild the property, bringing back native species and pay my way by hosting Queer doofs. The hilarious thing about this, of course, is that you couldn’t find a Queen less suited for this than I: I legit can’t hammer a nail in straight let alone run a farm! A grrrl can dream though.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Oh my God, this is so basic but: Greece. My boyfriend and I went for the first time a few years ago and, when I arrived, I was like “Ooooh, now I get what all the fuss is about”. Gorgeous weather, beautiful people and incredible food. What’s not to love?

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I take them to the Merri Creek. In Naarm/Melbourne, we are so blessed to have this river bushland run through our neighbourhoods.

What are you currently reading?
Aah. I’m currently reading The Neurodivergent Skills Workbook for Autism and ADHD by Jennifer Kemp and Monique Mitchelson. This book is helping me accept my recent diagnosis and make changes beyond just medication. Highly recommend!!

What are you currently listening to?
I love middle eastern house music. Armen Miran, Oceanvus Orientalis and Ali Farahani are in top rotation right now. Give me a fat beat and an Oud, and I’m a happy boy.

Happiness is?
It’s so corny. I found my guy and, after five years, we’re still in the googly-eyed stage of love. So happiness is  Saturday morning coffees and cuddles.

What does the future hold for you?
At the moment Joel Bray Dance works from project to project. Our vision for the future is being able to employ the stunning performers we work with as a full-time ensemble. Given how tough arts funding is at the moment, it’s an ambitious goal, but one worth fighting for.

Joel is the director & choreographer of MONOLITH – which will have its world premiere at Arts House, as part of the Rising Festival, from 3 – 15 June 2025. For more information, visit: www.artshouse.com.au for details.
