Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular

Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular One Day More photo by Daniel BoudFollowing its recent run in Sydney, the acclaimed arena production of Boublil & Schönberg’s legendary Les Misérables, with its glorious new staging and alumni cast has arrived at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena as part of the World Tour.

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, and set against the backdrop of 19th-century revolutionary France, has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide in 54 countries and in 22 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular and longest running musicals.

Melbourne’s first encounter with Les Misérables in 1989 and its infamous revolving barricade was credited with revitalising the cities music theatre industry and the redevelopment of its heritage theatres. It would also be a career defining moment for many who would go on to become some of our most beloved performers.

Some 35 years on, Cameron Mackintosh’s new arena production, presented in a concert format, which premiered in Belfast in 2024, has opened in Melbourne to delight a new generation of theatre audiences and Les Mis fans alike. Many of the creatives featured in earlier productions are involved.

Matt Kinley’s design is simply stunning. With a need accommodate the large cast and orchestra, the multi-levelled stage is imposing. A smattering of familiar settings are featured throughout.

Three large screens at the rear of the stage, offer cast close-ups, and projected visuals inspired by Victor Hugo’s own sketches, realised by Finn Ross. Lanterns and catwalks fly in and out, while the large lighting truss plays a role, forming important locations throughout.

Add Christine Rowland and Paul Wills’ additions to Andreane Neofitou’s original costumes, Paule Constable’s stunning lighting, combined with James Powell and Jean Pierre Van Der Spuy’s direction, this is classic story-telling at its best.

Full credit to Mick Potter’s full bodied sound which compliments Stephen Metcalfe’s lush orchestrations of Claude-Michel Schonberg’s magnificent score, played with precision by the orchestra under the direction of Adrian Kirk.

Les Misérables The Arena Spectacular Alfie Boe photo by Daniel BoudAn impressive line-up of extraordinary talent is fully on display. Alfie Boe in the iconic role of Jean Valjean gives a multi-layered performance, gritty and transcendent, rugged yet angelic. His stunning rendition of Bring Him Home was performed with breathtaking sincerity, and one of the many musical highlights of the evening.

The original West End Marius, Michael Ball takes on Javert with chilling gravitas that will delight long-time fans. Having first played this role in 2019, his steely presence and unyielding baritone offer a nuanced portrait of law’s tragic devotion. Stars is delivered with tragic nobility, while Javert’s Suicide is a masterclass in restraint and inner torment.

As Fantine, Rachelle Ann Go is incandescent. Embodying both fragility and ferocity, her I Dreamed a Dream surged with aching vulnerability. Shan Ako’s Éponine breaks hearts with every glance. Her On My Own is achingly intimate, tender and wounded. Brimming with longing and quiet strength, her Éponine is unforgettable in both voice and spirit.

Jac Yarrow brings youthful sincerity and noble spirit to Marius, navigating the character’s emotional arc with authenticity and surprising vocal richness. His chemistry with Beatrice Penny-Touré’s Cosette sparkles with innocent charm, her voice crystalline and emotionally resonant, infusing much warmth, intelligence and agency.

LES MISERABLES THE ARENA SPECTACULAR Marina Prior and Matt Lucas photo by Daniel BoudAustralia’s leading lady of the stage, Marina Prior, comes full circle, having played Cosette (and covering Fantine) in the original Australian production of Les Misérables in 1987, she now joins the World Tour cast as Madame Thénardier.

In cahoots with Matt Lucas’ Thénardier, their performances are deliciously wicked and an absolute joy to watch especially in the rousing Master of the House, only to up the ante in Beggars at the Feast.

James D. Gish delivers a fine portrayal of the rebellious student leader, Enjolras, while Earl Carpenter as the Bishop of Digne, Scarlett Sheludko as Little Cosette, Christopher Joseph as Gavroche, round out the supporting cast with pleasing performances. Supported by an outstanding ensemble, this beloved musical has been elevated to new heights.
