Ordinarily listed as Flo & Joan, these English sisters have been quite busy for the last four weeks with One Man Musical, nominated for the 2025 MICF Most Outstanding Show award. The Joan and Flo Show is more like the duo’s typical style of musical-comedy act, promising a mix of old and new tunes.
Nearing the end of this run of five dates at MICF, the Lower Town Hall was packed, although very few in attendance had seen One Man Musical. It seemed that word of mouth had brought in many unfamiliar with the tunes of Flo (keyboard) and Joan (percussion). This Saturday afternoon audience regularly found laughs in the twists and turns of our performers’ offerings.
It’s difficult not to feel a little jealous of the mirth of these newbies, as the set included proven tunes such as I Drank Too Much (it’s “relatable”) and a tribute to the English folk music tradition. Fans may be disappointed to not hear songs from more distant tours, such as Carol the Cracker Packer. However, judging from the sisters’ chats between songs, there may be some flexibility in the set.
Regardless, it’s likely that various songs are indeed new to a Melbourne audience. Some of these are drawn from the sisters’ history, such as one on Tony the bus driver. Others showcase Flo and Joan’s ability to put a snarky or fantastical slant on a tale, such as in a tune on a joyless acquaintance, or one on the quest that arises from waiting for parcel delivery.
Further novel content relates to some corporate work done by the sisters, producing jingles not likely to be selected by the client for broadcast. Perhaps fans will find that this show doesn’t quite reach the dizzying heights of other Flo and Joan offerings.
But it was still solidly entertaining, and has only a couple of moments that go beyond PG territory (that probably would go over kids’ heads anyway). It was also amusing to see how the sisters could turn each-other’s ad-libs and missteps into bonus laughs.
Although MICF is nearly at an end for another year, Sydney-siders should be pleased to know that Flo and Joan will visit you shortly.
