With vibrant direction by Nick Wilkinson, Madagascar the Musical has bounded onto the stage with a roar of colour, comedy and lots of energy.
Adapted from the beloved DreamWorks animated film, this production is an absolute joy from start to finish – a fast-paced, feel-good celebration of friendship and freedom that hits the mark, especially with the kids.
With a book by Kevin Del Aguila and original songs by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, the musical keeps the spirit of the film alive while giving it a fresh theatrical spin. From the opening number to the final bow, the songs are catchy and bursting with personality.
As Alex the Lion, Lochlan Erard delivers a charismatic performance, striking a balance between ego and vulnerability. As his zebra sidekick Marty, Iosia Tofilau is a ball of joyful energy – his wide-eyed wonder and infectious optimism lights up the stage every time he enters.
Jessica Ruck Nu’u brings a level of sass and soul as Gloria the Hippo, while Jeremy Hinman as Melman the giraffe, whose physicality and comedic timing, make for some of the show’s biggest laughs. With some outrageous moves, Matt Henderson’s King Julien brings a level of hilarity to the stage. His rendition of I Like to Move It is one of the highlights of the show.
Sonja McGirr-Garrett’s choreography is dynamic and delightful. Paired with Nick Braae’s musical direction, it brings plenty of rhythm and soul to the jungle. The score is spirited and playful giving both the leads and the ensemble plenty of chances to shine, from the ever-scheming penguins to a host of hilarious characters.
Visually the production is bright and adaptable, effortlessly whisking the audience from Central Park Zoo to the wilds of Madagascar, while the costumes cleverly blend animal traits with theatrical flair and cleverly incorporated puppetry.
Aimed squarely for younger audience members, Madagascar the Musical is the perfect school holiday treat!
