Brendan Murphy: Buffy Revamped

MICF Brendan Murphy Buffy RevampedBuffy Revamped is a devilishly clever title for a show that aims to recap all seven seasons of tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003). It’s also an accurate title – many key plot points and characters are recounted in a very different way to that of the source material in this high-energy, well-paced show.

The setup is that vampire Spike (UK comedian and writer Brendan Murphy), largely known for his particularly sadistic history, has awoken from sleep, in accordance with some prophecy. But he’s not in his regular haunt of Sunnydale California, setting for much of Buffy, or even in a suitable crypt.

No, he’s unhappy to be in a theatre, where a crowd expects to relive some of their favourite moments of the show in about 70 minutes. (Don’t think about it too much.) Fortunately, Spike, with only a little objection, is willing to share his insights on 144 episodes of life on the hellmouth.

In black gear and bleached-blonde hair, Murphy looks the part. His Spike is a suitably prickly-to-unhinged presence on stage at times, as when recalling his lost love, rivalries, and humiliations. Whilst his comments about the show can have satirical bite, the audience are safe throughout. (If you don’t know Buffy, there’s a good reason for that, but you’ll have to wait until we’re well into the show for the big reveal)

Rather than just racing through events, Murphy varies the style to keep the delivery fresh. The use of 90s songs (with suitably changed lyrics) to summarise events was particularly effective. Murphy also does good work with a selection of props. Through various quick costume changes he manages to get across characters’ traits, sometimes with an amusing amount of snarky editorial comment.

If you don’t know a whole lot about Buffy then it’s possible that many jokes and references will go over your head. So maybe attend with a Buffy obsessive in your life, and use the show as a portal into their world. Devotees who haven’t rewatched Buffy for a while will enjoy being reminded of some of its quirks, or the highlighting of Sunnydale’s logical inconsistencies.

With MICF 2025 almost done and dusted, fans take note: no vengeance demon can resolve your grievance if you don’t stake your claim to tickets for the final week.
