On the Couch with Penny Shaw

Penny Shaw AAR On the CouchWho is Penny Shaw?
Professionally speaking, I am an opera singer, writer, director, MC, podcaster and all round entertainer. Personally, I am an enthusiastic resident of South Fremantle, lucky to have four children, a husband and a beautiful dog, Otto.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Hard to say! I’ve watched enough science fiction to know that if I change anything in my past it could have a knock on effect, and that my current situation, (of which I am very fond!) might be completely different. So I’m going to say I’d have flossed my teeth more thoroughly and worn more sunscreen.

Who inspires you and why?
Right now I am inspired by hilarious dramatist W.S Gilbert and brilliant composer Arthur Sullivan who created the iconic The Pirates of Penzance – which I am currently working on for West Australian Opera. I have spent a large part of my professional life singing beautiful, classical music whilst also trying to be funny (check out DivaLicious!) and I’m sure that is, in part, due to growing up listening to Gilbert and Sullivan. I am also inspired by my son, Finn Pearson, who is forging a career as a contemporary musician; he has to be Gilbert, Sullivan, the orchestra and the lead singer!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would make people sing more. The science is in! Singing boosts endorphins and oxytocin, reduces stress and enhances mood. It strengthens the immune system, improves lung function, and increases oxygen flow to the brain. Group singing synchronizes heartbeats, fosters social bonding and reduces loneliness. If everyone spent more time singing and less time looking at their phones the world would be a better place.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’m pretty obsessed with Rottnest Island to be honest, a short bike ride, a ferry and there you are on a beautiful island with pristine beaches, great snorkelling and some fantastic places to eat and drink. I would like to say that my favourite holiday is skiing in Japan but I have never been. The universe can consider this a hint.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Perth is famous for its beaches of course, but I do wish we promoted our cultural spaces more. His Majesty’s Theatre (where we will be performing Pirates) is one of the most beautiful theatres in the Southern Hemisphere. Built in 1904 it has grand architecture, plush interiors and incredible acoustics. A trip to the theatre with friends is the ultimate act of self-care!

What are you currently reading?
Apart from my Pirates script, I am reading Hilary Mantel’s book of essays, A Memoir of My Former Self, which was a Christmas present from one of my children. The essays are beautifully crafted, engaging and short, which suits my current attention span.

What are you currently listening to?
I was given a record player for my birthday and have purchased a number of random and eclectic LPs from op shops which I am working my way through. After so many years of streaming services it is quite relaxing to put a record on and listen to it until the end. I am also subjecting myself to a fair amount of my own singing. Recording your practice and listening back is an essential, if occasionally painful(!), part of role preparation.

Happiness is?
I’m pretty happy right now! I’m under a tree in my garden, writing, dog at my feet, Carmen Suites on the turntable, drinking delicious coffee before I head to the beach for a walk and a dip. If only my 16 year old would put his cereal bowl in the dishwasher before he left for school things would be perfect…

What does the future hold for you?
In the immediate future I have some wonderful creative projects coming up with many of Perth’s premier arts companies, the first of which is playing Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance for West Australian Opera. The longer term future… who knows? The life of a freelance artist is nothing if not unpredictable, so I’m just going to say watch this space!

Penny stars as Ruth in West Australian Opera’s The Pirates of Penzance, which will play for a strictly limited season at Perth’s His Majesty’s Theatre from 28 March – 5 April 2025.
