On the Couch with Stephanie Arnold

PSMF Stephanie ArnoldWho is Stephanie Arnold?
I’m a cellist and educator with no fixed address, running around the country performing, creating, touring and facilitating music workshops.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
I feel like if you’re privileged enough to be able to choose what to do with your time, you should think about something you love to do and shine at, and then think about how you can use that to make the world a better place. Sometimes your work will be that thing and sometimes your work will support yourself to be able to do it. I feel as though as long as I stayed true to that motivation, I’d be happy with whatever I did.

Who inspires you and why?
People who listen, who allow time, space and have patience for others. Our world is often so loud, and busy with so many things competing for our attention, it’s hard sometimes to remember to give each other that grace. When I meet someone who is really listening to people, or who is connected and aware of their environment, I’m always inspired to practice and get better at that.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Last year I was lucky enough to be part of the amazing Flying Carpet Festival, a music and arts festival for children on the Turkish-Syrian border. It was so wonderful to meet the festival organisers who are beautiful examples of people dedicated to using their art to make a positive impact on the world.

It was really inspiring to meet and collaborate with so many other artists from all around the world who are pursuing that cause, as well as connecting with the joy and energy brought by the children who participated. I really believe we should all be prioritising ways for our art to make the world a more creative, imaginative, inclusive, fair and kind place to live. Especially for the little ones.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’m so lucky that the work I do has allowed me to spend lots of time on the road. I love the adventure of exploring a new country or a new country town. But there is a special place in my heart for beach time with family.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’ve been able to spend a lot of time in the NT over the last few years, and there’s such beautiful country up there. I feel so lucky that friends have shared some of their favourite places with me, so it’s always a joy to pass that on to someone else who is visiting for the first time.

What are you currently reading?
I’m reading one of last year’s Christmas books (just in time) The Romantic by William Boyd, an insight into what the ‘no fixed address’ life might have been like in the 19th century. I also love having an audio book for when I’m doing a long drive and I’ve just finished listening to Rick Morton’s book, Mean Streak, about Robodebt. It’s powerful and important and I highly recommend people read it.

What are you currently listening to?
Night Reign by Arooj Aftab. I saw her perform earlier this year, she is incredible and I’m obsessed.

also…

The slow movement from Shostakovich Piano Concerto no.2. After about a minute when the solo piano comes in, it’s so beautiful it hurts. Save it up for your next existential crisis and listen on repeat.

also…

Eleanor Jarwulngali’s new EP! This project is so beautiful to be a part of. Working with Eleanor and Mick really pushes my playing and creativity into a different sound world and I’m so grateful for that. Check it out!

Happiness is?
Friday night pasta. Being submerged in a body of water, beach, river, waterfall, bath. Music with friends and family.

What does the future hold for you?
I feel so excited to be starting off 2025 as the festival artist for this year’s Peninsula Summer Music Festival. In this role I get to head out into the community and I’ve been collaborating with local primary schools in the area.

I’m looking forward to performing for the Family Day in Balnarring and for Annie’s Court Aged Care in Shoreham, as well as two performances at the beautiful Peninsula Hot Springs. After that it’s shaping up to be a fun year of performing, touring, festivals and workshops! Can’t wait!

Stephanie can be seen performing at the 2025 Peninsula Summer Music Festival – which takes place at various venues across the Mornington Peninsula from 4 – 10 January. For more information and full program, visit: www.peninsulafestival.com.au for details.
