Who is Jonathon Oxlade?
Jonathon Oxlade is a production, costume and character designer for stage and screen, he also makes artists books.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Over the years of making creations with teams of brilliant artists it’s always important to tap into their expertise – everyone we are placed with has a wealth of knowledge – learning that has a huge impact on your own practice, and hopefully vice versa.
Who inspires you and why?
Artists that use their opportunities to make art to shift the form, fusing and hybridising between forms makes an inspiring artist to me.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I think making work with meaning, which promotes the contemporary world of young people and their families, makes a difference, a small inspiring one at the very least.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Recently I had an incredible time in the high country of Sweden, it’s breathtaking in Winter.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Depends where I am in the world, home base though would be The Scenic Hotel and Willunga Beach as my South Australian destinations, also the Eyre Peninsula and the Coorong National Park are stunning in so many ways.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading a book of poetry by Luke Beesley called In the Photograph and the memoirs of Derek Jarman titled Modern Nature.
What are you currently listening to?
Right now… Great Lake Swimmers, Linn Öberg and Jack Ladder.
Happiness is?
A beautiful safe home, or homes among like minds. I’ve had the privilege of making meaning connections in incredible places on our planet that I will continue to explore and share.
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully a whole lot more art making, and sharing it with others.
Jonathon is the Designer of Windmill Theatre Company’s production of Grug and the Rainbow – which will be presented in the Playhouse – Sydney Opera House from 11 – 22 December 2024. For more information, visit: www.sydneyoperahouse.com for details.
