Leading mid-career artist Tai Snaith launches a unique podcast series and parallel exhibition, A World of One’s Own, at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) from Saturday 6 March 2021.
With a nod to Virginia Woolf’s iconic 1929 essay, A Room of One’s Own, Snaith presents a series of relaxed, colloquial conversations with a selection of female-identifying artists from MPRG’s works on paper collection. Artists include Elizabeth Gower, Katherine Hattam, Deborah Kelly, Lily Mae Martin, Fiona McMonagle, Sally Smart and Lisa Waup.
Audiences will have the chance to view the artists’ works on paper (including Snaith’s own work) in person while listening to the corresponding podcast via a unique QR code placed next to the artwork. Snaith attempts to break down the how and why of making art.
“As a practicing artist myself, the process of selecting artists who make work that inspires me and then meeting and conversing with them in person is incredibly revealing and rewarding,” says Snaith.
“To have a personal insight into an artist’s practice and why they make work is such a privilege and one that I feel a responsibility to share. Sometimes it’s just comforting to know that other artists experience doubt in their work or difficulty around certain stages in life, like motherhood for example.”
“With each conversation I learn something new about different approaches to life and to practice, and I hope our audiences do to,” says Snaith.
This is the third series of A World of One’s Own with the first series being launched in 2017 as part of a project at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). The second series was launched in 2018 and supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.
Tai Snaith is an Australian artist with a broad and generous practice ranging from painting, ceramics, curating, conducting conversations and broadcasting. In addition to making, a large part of Snaith’s practice is involved in the discourse and community surrounding art.
Tai’s experience in the industry has been both impressive and multifaceted thus far. Snaith has worked as a producer and curator for Next Wave Festival, Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne Emerging Writer’s Festival, and has presented project spaces at Rotterdam Project(OR) Art Fair and Melbourne Art Fair. Her writing has been published in Art & Australia, Architecture Australia, Un Magazine, Houses and Artlink.
