Melbourne International Jazz Festival surviving these digital times

MIJF Kate CeberanoNext week, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF) was scheduled to present their twenty-third festival featuring more than 500 Australian, international and emerging artists in over 25 venues across Melbourne.

Instead, MIJF have now programmed These Digital Times – an online music festival featuring local and international artists during the last Saturday afternoon and evening of May, June and July.

Completely free, These Digital Times is live-streamed via the MIJF website direct to YouTube with performances and entertainment from 12.00pm to 10:30pm, including entertainment for kids, a career development panel for artists, performances from emerging artists and big names in Australian and international music.

International artists featured in the May edition of These Digital Times include jazz vocal legend Gretchen Parlato with her partner Mark Guiliana on drums who will create exclusive prerecorded content from their American studio and Italian violinist, Luca Ciarla, will stream his concert from Italy.

A handful of Australian artists will perform from a studio in Williamstown for the livestream, including Kate Ceberano singing songs from Bittersweet, her collaborative cover album of jazz standards. In the early afternoon the Teeny Tiny Steevies will jazz up their tunes for the kids and in the evening ARIA award-winner neo-soul vocalist, Kaiit will allure audiences with her bold electric style.

Melbourne-based Flora Carbo (saxophone) will playing with Sam Anning (bass) and her brother Theo Carbo (guitar); while saxophonist Julien Wilson will launch his latest album STOCK featuring Craig Fermanis (electric guitar), Chris Hale (bass guitar) and Hugh Harvey (drums).
