By a mere coincidence on a day that the Federal Government announced significant support to tackle domestic violence in Australia, Monstrous Theatre premiered Paul Mitchell’s new work, You’re the Man at the La Mama Theatre Courthouse.
Once a taboo subject in conversation, domestic violence has been a significant issue in Australia. Recently, there has been a growing focus on preventative measures and education to address the root causes of this important issue.
In development for some years, You’re the Man has evolved from Writer and Actor Paul Mitchell’s one-man-play, Ragdoll. While this ambitious production is a work of fiction, Mitchell has drawn on real-life events and research into family violence cases to deliver a thought-provoking narrative that aims to tackle complex social themes.
Director Theresa Borg has assembled a stellar cast including Justin Bell, Emma Choy, Paul Mitchell, Ryland Mitchell, Miles Paras and Philip Hayden, who navigate the struggles, resilience, and the complex dynamics of abusive relationships in a thought provoking way.
In particular, Justin Bell as Mark and Emma Choy as Phoebe, deliver standout portrayals that bring much emotional depth and authenticity to their roles. Also impressive was Ryland Mitchell as Liam, as we see him navigate the complexities of a teenager dealing with the effects of domestic violence and trauma to understanding their own psychological needs that includes hope and forgiveness.
Borg’s direction and staging was effective in maintaining the play’s momentum. Underscored by Simon Mason’s compelling sound design, light-hearted moments are convincingly juxtaposed against an air of menace. However, some scenes could have done with a little bit more breathing space to develop some of the play’s narratives such as Liam’s psychological state of mind.
Bookended by two decaying columns, Filipe Filihia’s split-level set design, complete with scaffolding and plastic sheet-covered reinforcement mesh, allowed the plays complementary narratives to co-exist side by side. It also provided Finnegan Comte-Harvey the opportunity to create some very effective lighting moments, especially when backlit.
Monstrous Theatre is to be commended for tackling the issue of domestic violence with exceptional sensitivity and insight, fostering a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding this issue, sparking much-needed reflection and conversation.
