Following seasons in Sydney and Brisbane, and soon to open in Melbourne, producers of We Will Rock You have announced the cancellation of the Perth and Adelaide seasons of the musical.
Produced by John Frost, in association with Queen Theatrical Productions, Phil McIntyre Entertainment and Tribeca Theatrical Productions, the We Will Rock You website, yesterday published on the Perth and Adelaide bookings page “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the season of We Will Rock You has been cancelled.” While no reason has been given, it is believed poor tickets sales in Perth is the reason for the cancellation.
We Will Rock You reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances and earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history. With Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors and “a band without parallel in the theatre” behind the cast, the audience can expect We Will Rock You to rock as fiercely as the best of Queen’s concerts.
Currently playing at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre until 20 August, before a season at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre from 28 August, We Will Rock You opened at the Sydney Lyric Theatre to solid reviews in April.
Bill Stephens for Arts Review said: “It’s a delightfully silly premise, but remarkably entertaining as updated by Ben Elton for this production with wicked references to prominent contemporary entertainers as historical artefacts, and given the benefit of dazzling lighting effects, witty costuming, and energetic choreography, it serves pretty well as a vehicle for a couple of dozen of Queen’s best songs, and provides a marvellous showcase for some remarkable Australian talent.”
Directed by Ben Elton, We Will Rock You stars Gareth Keegan as Galileo, Erin Clare as Scaramouche, Casey Donovan as Killer Queen, Brian Mannix as Buddy, Jaz Flowers as Oz, Thern Reynolds as Brit, and Simon Russell as Khashoggi, and features more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and of course, We Will Rock You.
