Inviting audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back, Trafalgar Releasing has announced that Hadestown: The Musical will screen in cinemas across Australia from 13 October 2026 for a limited time.
Winner of eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, Hadestown has established itself as a genre-defying global theatre phenomenon, blending modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale of two intertwining love stories, that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone.
Filmed live at the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End, Hadestown features the five original Broadway principals: Reeve Carney (The Great Gatsby, Cabaret), André De Shields (The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’), Amber Gray (The Rocky Horror Show, Eureka Day), Eva Noblezada (Miss Saigon, Les Misérables), and Patrick Page (The Gilded Age, Julius Caesar), with members of the original West End cast.
Written by Anaïs Mitchell (Young Man in America, Child Ballads) and directed by Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812), Hadestown follows two intertwining love stories – young dreamers Orpheus (Carney) and Eurydice (Noblezada), and King Hades (Page) and his wife Persephone (Gray) – as messenger-to-the-gods Hermes (De Shields) guides audiences on a journey to the underworld and back.
The Hadestown creative team includes David Neumann (Choreography), Rachel Hauck (Scenic Design), Michael Krass (Costume Design), Bradley King (Lighting Design), Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz (Sound Design), Liam Robinson (Music supervision and Vocal Arrangements), Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose (Arrangements and Orchestrations), Ken Cerniglia (Dramaturgy). Casting for the London production is by Jacob Sparrow. Original Broadway Casting by Benton Whitley CSA and Duncan Stewart CSA.
Hadestown is produced by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy. They also serve as producers on the film. The stage production was filmed in London by director Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound.
Hadestown is in its 7th year on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 W 48thStreet) and in its 3rd year in the West End (returning to London, five years after its 2018 engagement at the National Theatre). The record-breaking North American tour completed its coast-to-coast 3-year run in 2024, and productions have played to acclaim across the globe in South Korea, Sydney, Melbourne, and Amsterdam.
