The Wedding Singer is a classic musical comedy based on the 1998 film, and WAAPA’s second year musical theatre students brought it to life in their debut public performance. From the vibrant opening number, the audience was swept up in slick, energetic dance moves that were sustained throughout the entire show.
Will Johnstone’s Robbie Hart shone with excellent comic timing, expressive facial features and a strong voice. He manages to navigate the sadness of a breakup and the euphoria of falling in love again with conviction and humour.
Jessie O’Connor, as Julia Sullivan, was impressive with her strong, clear, and crisp vocals. Her duets with Johnstone throughout the show were strong, often blending into powerful harmonies.
Abby Dickson as Linda, shone in A Note from Linda as she hilariously danced across the stage in silver glittery high heels, complete with a fan-blow glamour moment. Charlotte Allen, as Holly, commanded attention with a standout rendition of Saturday Night in the City, while Harry Ortuso’s George revealed an impressive vocal range.
Romy Devlin, as Rosie the grandmother, had the audience laughing with her hip-hop routine in Move That Thing and Oliver Guglia’s character, Glen, had the perfect dose of smarmy obnoxiousness as Julia’s money obsessed, cheating fiancé.
Oscar Langmar as a member of the ensemble possessed a magnetic stage presence that continually drew your attention to the various characters he portrayed. His “Billy Idol” impression was comical.
A highlight of the show was the set by Ruby Trevor-Mills. Complete with a smaller performance stage in the shape of wedding cake, the stage was adorned with large white drapes of material that gave the feel of a wedding veil. Mirror balls and a giant red heart with flowing tinsel helped set the playful tone of the show.
As they continue to develop their craft, this group of talented second year students will no doubt continue to forge a connection that will enable them to translate this to the characters they play.
Directed by Adam Mitchell and performed by an energetic cast, The Wedding Singer is a fun night out full of laughs and charm.
