Victorian Opera presents a haunting new production of Britten Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw at the Palais Theatre from 29 September – 1 October 2026.
Adapted from Henry James’ gothic novella, The Turn of the Screw has spooked generations of readers with the chilling tale of a Governess, the children in her ward, and sinister forces that may, or may not, be tormenting them. Britten’s 1954 adaptation dials up the suspense and leaves audience members questioning everything they’ve just witnessed.
In a gripping production by Victorian Opera’s Artistic Director Stuart Maunder AM, the scale of this chamber opera is both intimate and immense. Reunited with frequent collaborators, Maunder is joined by Tony Award-winning set and designer Roger Kirk and lighting designer Trudy Dalgleish. Together, they strikingly conjure the eerie setting of a shadowy English manor where nothing is what it seems…
Renowned Britten specialist Paul Kildea conducts Orchestra Victoria in this production falling on the 50th anniversary of the composer’s death. Britten’s music is incredibly performed by a stellar cast including Rachelle Durkin as the terrorised governess and Sharon Prero as the compassionate housekeeper Mrs Grose.
As the ghostly presences, Kanen Breen and Michaela Cadwgan appear as Peter Quint and Miss Jessel. Genevieve Gray and Oliver Thadoe Naing star as the disturbed children, Flora and Miles, with Hamilton Binnie Garcia also understudying the role of Miles.
“Every so often, a production comes together with the perfect cast, and this is one of those occasions. Britten’s masterpiece is among the greatest operas of the 20th century and has long held a place in my top five favourites. It is a privilege to bring this extraordinary work to life alongside such exceptional artists,” said Director Stuart Maunder AM.
This is a rare chance to experience Britten’s terrifying opera. Join Victorian Opera for a spine-tingling night out!
