Australia celebrated one of the most extraordinary musical careers in Australian history last night, as The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend – The Celebration Concert, produced by Cochrane Entertainment and TEG Dainty, transformed Rod Laver Arena into a spectacular, emotional and unforgettable celebration of Australia’s beloved living legend.
The celebration reached far beyond Melbourne, with the concert streamed live into HOYTS Cinemas allowing audiences Australia-wide to unite and celebrate the songs and legacy of John Farnham.
In a night filled with soaring vocals, extraordinary musicianship, laughter, tears and some very special surprises, more than 120 artists and musicians came together to perform the songs that have formed the soundtrack to generations of Australians.
From the opening notes of Age of Reason, the kick-off of a spectacular 9-minute opening, Rod Laver Arena was on its feet, singing, dancing, cheering and celebrating a catalogue of music that has become part of the fabric of Australian life.
One of the evening’s special moments came when John’s son Rob Farnham took to the stage to perform Love To Shine, adding a deeply personal dimension to a night dedicated to celebrating John’s extraordinary legacy.
In a breathtaking and unforgettable finale, the evening’s extraordinary line-up of artists came together on stage with 24 pipers to perform John Farnham’s iconic anthem You’re The Voice, after belting out It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll), which John proclaims as “the best rock and roll song ever written”.
With so many of the artists who have been inspired by John’s music standing together and singing the song that has become one of Australia’s great anthems, it was a spectacular and deeply moving final moment – one that will remain etched in the memories of everyone who witnessed it.
Under the musical direction and arrangements of John Farnham’s longtime Musical Director, Chong Lim AM, the star-studded line-up on the night included Vanessa Amorosi, Tina Arena, Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Diesel, Rob Farnham, Dannielle Gaha, Hans, Human Nature, Jack Jones, Richard Marx, Jessica Mauboy, Ruby Rodgers, Jon Stevens, Mitch Tambo, Keith Urban, Mark Vincent and Ross Wilson, with surprise guest Chris Martin, Celine Dion, Hugh Jackman appearing remotely for their performances.
Legendary music man Chong Lim AM worked with all artists on their individual songs and arrangements and conducted the 38-piece orchestra and The John Farnham Band, ensuring the concert carried the unmistakable sound, energy and authenticity of the John Farnham live experience.
“I have been lucky enough to see some extraordinary concerts in my career, but tonight was very special – every artist brought something of themselves to John’s music, while never losing the spirit of the original songs. It was a spectacular celebration of an extraordinary Australian artist,” said Paul Dainty AO.
The concert gave Head and Neck Cancer Australia, a national platform for fundraising and awareness reflecting the significance of John’s personal journey and his desire to give back.
