A story of love, grief and menial office work, The Honeytrap presents the Australian premiere of Elizabeth Meriwether’s The Mistakes Madeline Made at the Abbotsford Convent Industrial School for a limited season.
Edna has stopped bathing. She has soap and water, but for now, the ghost of her brother is soaking in the tub and she’d like it to stay that way.
After the tragic death of her war correspondent brother, the once cheerful Edna finds herself alienated from her previous life and working in a basement office, catering to the trivial needs of a wealthy Manhattan family.
At the beck and call of her tightly wound boss and in between buying sneakers, “backup” sneakers and toothpaste, Edna begins to fall apart. Haunted by the memory of her brother’s last visit, Edna stops bathing, develops a violent apathy for her work and pathologically seeks out losers for a series of one night stands.
Elizabeth Meriwether’s The Mistakes Madeline Made is an absurdist commentary on our fascination with the order and sanitisation of our own narrow lives, our disconnection from foreign tragedies and the ongoing atrocities of war.
Founded in 2012, The Honeytrap are a Melbourne based production ensemble producing local and international work for screen and stage. They lovingly embrace bold subject matter and work to create honest and emotionally engaging entertainment.
