The Lighthouse

BK-Opera-The-Lighthouse-Jonathan-Rumsam-Daniel-Sinfield-and-Henry-ShawInspired by the true story of three lighthouse keepers who disappeared without a trace, BK Opera presents Peter Maxwell Davies’ chilling psychodrama, The Lighthouse, at Brunswick Mechanics Performing Arts Centre from 8 – 10 September 2022.

Delving into the effects of isolation and resulting cabin fever, three singers play multiple characters, exploring the psychological depths of fractured and broken men.

Directed by Kate Millett and conducted by Evan Lawson, the ensemble cast tackling this modern opera thriller features tenor Daniel Sinfield, baritone Jonathan Rumsam, and bass Henry Shaw.

Millett explores the poisonous chemistry between men sick of each other and themselves, isolated and trapped, descending into madness: “With its emphasis on collective madness, The Lighthouse is a particularly prescient piece to be performed in Melbourne 2022.”

“Having suffered through one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world over the last two years, Melbourne is uniquely suited to identify with the central characters of the lighthouse keepers, struggling with isolation, loneliness, and the ensuing impact on mental health,” said Millet.
