The God of Isaac

Darlinghurst Theatre The God of IsaacAn identity crisis of comedic proportions, Shalom and Moira Blumenthal Productions in association with Darlinghurst Theatre Company presents the Australian premiere of James Sherman’s The God of Isaac at the Eternity Playhouse this September.

When Isaac Adams, a second-generation American Jewish journalist, learns of plans for a Nazi group to stage a demonstration in Skokie, Illinois, he wonders what, if anything, his involvement should be.

Because Isaac was raised in a non-observant home, his Jewishness had been of no relevance to him, “being Jewish meant no more than being right-handed.” Determined to find the truth, Isaac goes on a quest to find answers about his heritage, his mother, and himself.

Isaac questions a mixture of Jewish folk in his search – including his mother. Any seriousness is punctured with pop culture vignettes, recast with Jewish characters. The stars of Huckleberry Finn, On the Waterfront and The Wizard of Oz, among others, become members of the tribe. It’s hilarious… but it drives his mother crazy.

James Sherman is a celebrated American playwright whose work has been performed across the globe. His works include Mr. 80%, The Escape Artist, Beau Jest, This Old Man Came Rolling Home, Jest A Second!, Romance in D, From Door to Door, The Old Man’s Friend, Affluenza!, Half and Half, Relatively Close and Jacob and Jack.
