The CUBE: Illuminating Arts Experiences

Born-in-a-Taxi-Enlighten-photo-by-Emma-Jane-Pirvel-CollinsThe magic of metamorphosis, an experience for hope and unity, and an explosion of street art – all this and more in Born in a Taxi’s The CUBE. For six days this April, The CUBE will offer a series of innovative and immersive arts experiences for people of all ages.

Born in a Taxi is led by artistic directors Carolyn Hanna and Penny Baron. For more than 30 years they have produced original, physically driven and participatory works in theatres, site specific and outdoor contexts, that focus on real-time co-creation.

They describe The CUBE as a giant display case for art of all kinds. “We wanted to bring incredible arts experiences out of the galleries and theatres and into public spaces — removing barriers that often prevent people accessing creative experiences,” said Carolyn. “Each day will offer something new and exciting for audiences and passers-by.”

Audiences will delight in the premiere of Butterfly House, a magical collision of art, installation, technology, performance, community and sustainability.

Create your own butterfly using recycled materials and release it to fly within the glittering butterfly chamber, while interacting with performers and puppets. Take home some butterfly plants for your backyard or balcony.

Experience Enlighten – a unique choreographed and spontaneous performance integrating dance, comedy and participatory theatre with sophisticated interactive lighting.

Melbourne-based experimental dance-theatre company Alice Will Caroline presents CUBED – an experimental, site-specific work of performance, developed in the daytime and performed at night.

The three performer/creators dissect the performance tropes of the 1997 film Cube, recasting them in their own distinctive, sly and surprising aesthetic.

The CUBE also will become a hub of artistic exploration and creation when it’s transformed into a gallery, showcasing local street artists at work.

Witness a work of art being created before your eyes – then take it up a notch as TikTok/Hip Hop illuminati – L2R Dance – gets down with community.
