The Children

It leaves the audience questioning and pondering social responsibility and the kind of world we could potentially leave behind for The Children of the future.

Written by Lucy Kirkwood, the dialogue in the play is seamlessly natural. The cast members, at times, talk over each other and pause in earnest as they consider what their responses should be. At times funny, poignant and intriguing, the play is performed by an exceptional cast under the direction of Mel Cantwell.

Hazel and Robin, played by Nicola Bartlett and Humphry Bower, are two retired nuclear scientists living a seemingly peaceful life of retirement. That is until the arrival of an old friend and colleague, Rose, played by Caroline Brazier.

To reveal any more of the story line would ruin and devalue the audience response and appreciation of this beautifully crafted, dynamic production. These three actors coexist on stage to produce outstanding performances. Each is given space on stage to interact with each other and dramatically and credibly flesh out their story.

You can tell from the moment Rose arrives on Hazel’s doorstep something is amiss. Bartlett delivers her lines with a nervous energy that hints to the audience something is not quite right with this friendship.

It is a scientific guess who; as you try to piece together the relationship the three characters once shared. And the ride you are taken on, as you uncover and discover their secrets from the past, is thrilling.

Brazier’s soliloquy towards the end of the play is delivered with passion and conviction. At the final bows you could witness her physically releasing the character from her being.

Lighting, designed by Matthew Marshall, is effective as the stage is awash in a stark bright white light, as the truths from the characters pasts are revealed. This helps add to the imagery and drama of the storytelling.

You know you have witnessed great theatre when you leave wondering and questioning human decisions and the consequences that result. And as governments continue to argue over the best solutions to the energy crisis, The Children, will have you doing just that.
