The Book Club

Deb can’t quite shake the feeling there’s something missing in her life. Her kids have left home. Her husband is sport-obsessed. Meanwhile, she dreams of getting love letters in the post from Martin Amis. When her friend Trish pushes her to join the eccentric local book club, self-confessed ‘bookaholic’, Deb decides there’s nothing to lose.  Little does she know her fantasies will start to become reality…

Australian theatre legends and long-time collaborators, director Rodney Fisher and actress Amanda Muggleton reunite in this raucous one-woman comedy by award-winning New Zealand playwright, Roger Hall.

Amanda Muggleton is a doyenne of the Australian entertainment industry with a career spanning more than four decades. She has more than 50 theatre, film and television credits to her name, most recently appearing in Boston Marriage for QTC, and as Miss Hannigan in the national tour of Annie. For Ensemble Theatre, Amanda has appeared in Just The Ticket, Ruby Sunrise and Losing Louis.

Highlight productions of her career include Hello Dolly!, Masterclass, Shirley Valentine, Calendar Girls, Blood Brothers and Steaming. Amanda is best remembered for her role as Chrissie Latham in Prisoner from 1979-83. Film roles include Mad Max 1, Idiot Box, Feeling Sexy, Matching Jack and Fatal Honeymoon.

Rodney Fisher first directed Amanda in The Book Club for the Noosa Long Weekend Festival in 2008, re-working the production for a national tour in 2013, and now presenting this acclaimed production as part of Ensemble Theatre’s 2015 season.
