Defrost Festival returns in 2026 to celebrate its 5th consecutive instalment, with the largest and most exciting program yet.
Showcasing the very best of unscripted and sketch comedy, Defrost shines a spotlight on the rising talent from Melbourne and beyond. From 29 July to 8 August, over 50 unique productions will heat up the CBD, drawing from local and interstate artists across improv, sketch, and experimental performance.
“Defrost is not just a festival, it’s a platform. For new voices, bold ideas, and innovative performance,” says Festival Director, Laura Buskes.
Defrost is a celebration of spontaneity, creativity, excellence and community. It champions emerging artists and also offers some sizzling entertainment during the coldest time of the year!

The Defrost Ritual
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre: Wednesday 29 July
The Defrost Ritual is the opening night of Defrost Festival – a free, one-night celebration that kicks off two weeks of the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest improv and comedy festival. Part ceremony, part jam, part party, it’s where the whole community gathers to farewell the year that was, welcome the one ahead, and open the festival together.
Improvised Idol
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre: Thursday 30 July
Inspired by Australia’s favourite singing competition, Improvised Idol follows a cast of hopeful contestants as they chase stardom with original songs, dramatic backstories, and big dreams. Using suggestions gathered from the audience. the cast will create unforgettable contestants before your eyes, from aspiring country stars and pub-rock legends to unlikely dreamers with a song in their hearts.
GREMLIN
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre: Friday 31 July
Gremlin is a live-directed, partially planned improv comedy performance with full set, costumes, light and sound. The unseen but all powerful in-show direction hovers over the improvisers at all times – nudging details and twisting circumstances in creative and covert ways, making it impossible to know if you’re watching fate or free will. Is it carefully crafted theatre or complete chaos?
Amuse-Bouche
Theory Bar: Friday 31 July
After a packed-out run and an extra show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, award-winning comedian and ex -Triple R Breakfaster Nat Harris returns, along with her “low-key iconic character, Pussy Willow” (The Age), to the Defrost Festival with a freewheeling hour of whodunnit character comedy. Expect characters, stories, recipes and meltdowns as big as a chef coming down in a commercial kitchen.
Car Show: A Tragicomedy in Two Parts (no interval)
Theory Bar: Saturday 1 August
Three friends, one car, 50 minutes. With an average driving speed of 50 jps (jokes per second), baby, we’re going places. A comedy show set on a road trip that’s between a serious Pulitzer prize-worthy drama and the movie Speed (haven’t seen it). Let Madi Chetcuti, Conor Lynch and Maddison Verduci strap you into your baby booster seat and take you on a trip (no tolls). BYO seatbelts!
3 Mad Rituals
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre: Thursday 6 August
The father of modern improvisation, Del Close, died in 1999 but his work lives on through the inspiring formats he pioneered. The Improv Conspiracy’s top performers attempt Del’s 3 Mad Rituals: his best-known pieces performed back-to-back-to-back based on a single audience suggestion. This is 90 minutes of thrilling, spontaneous excitement featuring the Deconstruction, The Movie and The Harold.
Pull Yourself Together
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre: Thursday 6 August
Following a sell-out successful run of shows in 2025, Marie Katherine is thrilled to showcase another Pull Yourself Together – an experimental genre improv show spotlighting Melbourne’s best Actors and Improvisors through a mix of scripted scenes and improv.
