Teague Leigh: The Reclamation of Terra

Midsumma 2024 Teague Leigh Sculpture Tidal from the series The Reclamation of TerraA multi-media call-to-arms, Teague Leigh presents The Reclamation of Terra at the Victorian Artists Society, from 25 January – 5 February, as part of the 2024 Midsumma Festival.

In this exciting multimedia exhibition, queer disabled trans man, Teague Leigh, asks the LGBTQIA+SB community and our allies to rally together to reverse global warming and the current destruction of the planet.

Since the early 20th Century, the trans identity has been forming into what we see now as the modern trans rights movement. However, whilst my trans siblings celebrate each hard-won advancement, another war is being fought to keep the planet, our home, from being destroyed.

Through social championing, the rainbow community has historically proven that together it has the power to enact great change. Right now, there is no greater change required than saving the Earth.

Nature has always been a great source of calmness for Teague and being diagnosed with autism in adulthood, it makes total sense that being in a void of constant assault is healing. For many, getting away or simply sitting in green spaces is a rejuvenating tonic.

Teague is invested in saving these dwindling pockets of nature as they help him live his life as a functioning member of society. What shall become of us if nature is stripped away? How shall we regain equilibrium and contribute to society?

The Reclamation of Terra exhibition will be opened with an exuberant gala celebration (Thursday 25 January), as Teague Leigh will showcase outstanding performers from the LGBTQIA+SB community including Frock Hudson (Dean Arcuri), Indian club & theatre producer, musician, and Goddess, Naavikaran; and proud queer trans woman Bayley Turner.

Expect entertainers, speeches, and surprises galore as we rejoice in the splendour of the camp community whilst surrounded by thought-provoking artworks. Food and drinks supplied – everyone is welcome in this accessible heritage listed venue.

Teague Leigh was a 2022-23 recipient of the Yarra Sculpture Gallery Summer Residency and a recipient of the Midsumma Pathways Mentorship Program 2022-23. His artwork has appeared across multiple galleries in Naarm (Melbourne), including his debut solo exhibition at SOL Gallery in September 2023.
