Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards, Sydney Musical Theatre present Next to Normal at the Greenhalgh Theatre, Lindfield, for a limited season until 26 July 2026.
With music by Tom Kitt, and book & lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the acclaimed rock musical has become one of the defining musicals of the twenty-first century, especially when conversations around mental health continue to evolve across Australia.
Raw, intimate and emotionally charged, Next to Normal promises an unforgettable theatrical experience that will resonate long after the final curtain. The musical follows a family navigating the impact of a mother’s unresolved grief of losing a son and her subsequent bipolar disorder which affects each member differently.
From a daughter who has lived in her dead brother’s shadow to a father struggling to hold the family together and unable to let himself grieve. It is a beautifully crafted musical that challenges preconceptions and continuously forces the audience to think deeply.
Directed by Sarah Shanahan, with musical direction by Tom Borbilas, Next to Normal features a stellar principal cast including Izzy Tilden as Diana, Simon Donovan as Dan, Raven Swinkels as Natalie, Hugh Arthur as Gabe, Nye Morrison as Henry, and Brayden Macfarlane-Walker as Doctor Madden & Dr Fine. Production design is by Alaska Jarvis.
Across different performances, non-binary performer Raven Swinkels will alternate between the roles of Natalie and Gabe. Believed to be a first for any single production of Next to Normal, the unique casting choice sees one performer inhabit both siblings, offering audiences two strikingly different perspectives on the Goodman family’s story.

Since making its Broadway debut in 2010, Next to Normal has secured its place as one of the most influential musicals of the modern era. The groundbreaking musical earned three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just one of a select handful of musicals to receive the prestigious literary honour.
More than a decade later, its impact continues to grow. A critically acclaimed London revival, which transferred from the Donmar Warehouse to the West End, received four Laurence Olivier Award nominations and introduced the musical to a new generation of audiences, demonstrating that its themes remain as urgent and affecting as ever.
At a time when Australia’s theatre industry continues to navigate significant commercial challenges, with several major productions recently postponing or cancelling Australian seasons, Sydney Musical Theatre remains committed to investing in bold, high-quality live performance and creating opportunities for local artists to tell important stories.
