Direct from the Cannes Competition, Eddington – the explosive new film from Ari Aster will have its Australian Premiere at the 72nd Sydney Film Festival.
Set in May 2020 as COVID begins to spread globally, Eddington follows the increasingly bitter divisions in a small New Mexican town. When the mayor and entrepreneur Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) faces off against the town’s sheriff, Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), over mask mandates, the conflict quickly escalates into a mayoral race with far-reaching and devastating consequences.
In what is sure to be one of the year’s most provocative and discussed films, Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) takes a long, hard look at his divided nation and sends a compelling and urgent warning signal to societies everywhere. Alongside Pascal and Phoenix, the film also stars Emma Stone and Austin Butler.
“With Eddington, Ari Aster turns his razor-sharp gaze to the fractured heart of America, and perhaps the world, in a film that is provocative, urgent and completely gripping,” said SFF Festival Director, Nashen Moodley. “This is a compelling work that speaks to the chaos and contradictions of our times – and one that will spark passionate conversation.
“We are delighted to present its Australian Premiere at Sydney Film Festival and offer Sydneysiders the chance to be some of the very first people in the world outside of Cannes to see this incendiary film.”
The 72nd Sydney Film Festival runs from 4 – 15 June 2025. Tickets and Flexipasses are on sale. For more information and full program, visit: www.sff.org.au for details.
