Sydney Dance Company reveals 2018 season

Sydney Dance Company Davide Di GiovanniMarking his tenth year as Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela has revealed his 2018 season that features exquisite athleticism and human connection that comes from within.

Sydney Dance Company commences the year with a program of extensive international touring. In January, the Company will tour to the prestigious Festival Internacional Santiago a Mil, performing at the Teatro Municipai in Santiago, Chile, followed by performances in Bogota, Columbia.

In April, the Company will undertake a European Spring Tour with Sydney Dance Company’s first ever performances in Paris at The Théâtre National de Chaillot. The Company will also perform at the Belgrade Dance Festival in Serbia, Ljubljana, Slovenia and in Germany.

In May, Bonachela presents his first full-length work since the epic masterpiece 2 One Another and the critically acclaimed Project Rameau in 2012, with the world premiere of ab [intra]. Meaning ‘from within’ in Latin, the work explores the depths of human impulse, what drives our relationships and ignites our ambitions.

A dynamic work of exquisite athleticism, ab [intra] exposes the shared instincts that drive us apart and bring us back together. This visceral journey into the extremes of human nature will open Sydney Dance Company’s 2018 season in June and will tour nationally.

ab [intra] will be presented at the Roslyn Packer Theatre, Walsh Bay: 14 – 26 May, and Arts Centre Melbourne: 30 May – 2 June, before a National Tour: 15 June – 1 September 2018.

In October, a thrilling double bill at the Roslyn Packer Theatre, Forever & Ever will feature Rafael Bonachela’s award-winning Frame of Mind and Antony Hamilton’s brand new work Forever & Ever.

Frame of Mind explores the volatility of the human psyche. Winner of four Helpmann Awards, this emotionally charged work is set to a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner from The National, recorded by San Francisco’s renowned Kronos Quartet and features a stunning set by Ralph Myers.

Forever & Ever is a world premiere from internationally acclaimed, Berlin-based choreographer Antony Hamilton. The hypnotic pulse of machine influenced movement and vivid imagination will be driven by an original score by Julian Hamilton of The Presets. Hamilton’s multi-award winning performances involve a sophisticated melding of movement, sound and visual design, which has helped to cement his place at the forefront of a new wave of contemporary dance.

Co-presented by Sydney Dance Company and Carriageworks, New Breed is back for a fifth year in 2018. Showcasing raw talent and rich diversity of choreographic ideas, Australia’s next generation of dance-makers will create brand new pieces with the 16 Sydney Dance Company dancers. New Breed will be presented 29 November – 8 December.
