Sunday in the Park with George

Little Triangle Sunday in the Park with George AARInspired by George Seurat’s famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Little Triangle presents Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical masterpiece, Sunday in the Park with George for a limited season at The Depot Theatre from 6 September as part of the 2017 Sydney Fringe.

Sunday in the Park with George is one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, earning the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist. The musical is an experiment in form and aesthetic, dictated by questions concerning art, children, and one’s legacy.

The musical follows George in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, and the immense struggle in finding one’s artistic voice. In doing so, George becomes more and more distant from the one woman who truly sees him for who he really is. A century later, George’s great-grandson, himself a struggling artist, grapples with issues of artistic ingenuity, and a public who just doesn’t understand.

Sunday in the Park with George won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards for design (and a nomination for Best Musical), numerous Drama Desk Awards, the 1991 Olivier Award for Best Musical and the 2007 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. The musical has enjoyed many revivals throughout America, the UK and Australia.
