Spring Awakening

TYP Spring Awakening photo by Amelia J DowdAn electrifying fusion of rebellion, sexual awakening and rock and roll, Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) presents Spring Awakening at The Wharf from 27 April 2016.

Based on the original play by Frank Wederkind, with Book and lyrics by Steven Sater and Music by Duncan Sheik, and the winner of 8 Tony Awards (including Best Musical), Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable.

Award winning director and ATYP Alumnus, Mitchell Butel (Violet) direction, ATYP is about to deliver a sexy, sweaty, slice of rock ‘n’ roll musical mayhem, featuring the hottest young cast to hit a stage this year, that will blow the minds of Sydney audiences.

ATYP is no stranger to this controversial, sexually provocative oft banned work written over 100 years ago. Spring Awakening was first produced in 1984 and then again in 1989 and featured actors across the two productions including Nicole Kidman, Felix Williamson (The Great Gatsby, Avalon Now), Morgan (Morganics) Lewis and many others.

Some stories that remain current generation after generation. When the stage play of Spring Awakening was first produced in Germany in 1891 the references to masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide saw it banned. Fast forward 116 years and the musical adaptation scandalised audiences on Broadway.

The behaviour of teenagers has been shocking people for hundreds of years. Let’s see whether audiences in 2016 are still appalled by the revelation that teenagers spend an awful lot of time thinking about sex!

“And for all its frankness about the quest for carnal knowledge, it is blessedly free of the sniggering vulgarity that infects too many depictions of sexuality onstage and on screen.” – The New York Times
