Sonder: celebrating stories through song

Sonder The Alex TheatreA celebration of stories through song, some of Melbourne’s musical theatre talents take to the stage of The Alex Theatre, St. Kilda for two nights only on Saturday 5 & Monday 7 August 2017 to raise funds for beyondblue.

Drawing inspiration from “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own” from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, Sonder will feature a collection of pop and theatre music songs by an eclectic mix of composers including The Beatles, Jason Robert Brown, Anthony Crowley, Drew Gasparini, Carole King, Pasek & Paul, and Australian musical duo, Dean Bryant & Mathew Frank, just to name a few…

Directed by Clary Riven, and with musical direction by Kellie-Anne Kimber, Sonder features a talented cast including Jake Fehily, Sahra Floratos, Lachlan Hamill, Bram Harris, Nigel Huckle, Eloise Marty, Tayla Muir, and Luisa Scrofani.

“We all have our own ambitions, worries, friends, routines, thoughts and ideas that fill our internal worlds, yet we experience all of these things in isolation, unaware of the exploits of others,” says director, Clary Riven. “Sonder explores stories through song with a view to be life-affirming and promote boldness and resilience as well as empathy for the people around us.”

“Our cast is made up of talented, up-and-coming performers who embody the spirit of Melbourne’s theatre community. I think that it is vital for our industry to give opportunities to such people, as well as give something back to the universe.”

On appointing beyondblue as the charity of choice to receive all proceeds from the show, Sonder‘s organisers are well aware of the mental health issues are felt by many people who are involved in the performing arts industry. “beyondblue promotes good mental health, breaking down the stigma and discrimination associated with anxiety, depression and other related mental health disorders,” said Riven.
