The Wangaratta Art Gallery has unveiled a temporary display of Tom Roberts’ Shearing the rams, 1890 to coincide with the 130th anniversary of Roberts painting the work near Corowa in NSW, half an hour from Wangaratta.
The exclusive display, titled Shearing the rams, the artist, the painting, a moment in time will be presented until 28 February 2021 along with Roberts’ work on paper titled First sketch for Shearing the rams, 1888, also on loan from the NGV Collection, offering audiences insight into the artist’s creative process.
“Tom Roberts’ Shearing the rams is an iconic work in both the NGV Collection and the Australian artistic cannon,” said Tony Ellwood AM, Director NGV. “In this work, the artist captures the atmosphere of the shearing shed with an astonishing realism, but also with a sense of reverence for Australian pastoral life.”
“The NGV is committed to providing access to art and design to all Victorians. We are proud to be sharing this significant and enduringly popular work from the NGV Collection with Wangaratta Art Gallery – and returning the work to the very region where it was originally created.”
