Queensland Ballet is set to enchant audiences with Liam Scarlett’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream this April in the Playhouse – Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
A Midsummer Night’s Dream first charmed Brisbane audiences in 2016, and promises an unforgettable experience filled with mischief, mayhem, and Shakespearean magic.
Queensland Ballet’s newly appointed Artistic Director, Ms. Leanne Benjamin OBE AM, eagerly anticipates presenting this iconic production.
“It’s a timeless piece that blends Shakespeare’s magnetic narrative with the expressive artistry of ballet, and I believe it will captivate and delight audiences of all ages,” said Ms Benjamin.
Set against the ethereal backdrop of a moonlit forest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream transports audiences into the mesmerising realm of fairies and woodland characters with the mortal world of unrequited lovers.
The tale takes place in a moonlit forest, where Fairy King Oberon and Fairy Queen Titania quarrel over a sleeping Changeling. Meanwhile, some inquisitive explorers enter the forest in search of exotic specimens, finding instead a dreamscape of mistaken identities, love triangles, and captivating characters that flit, hover, and flutter.
Renowned choreographer, Liam Scarlett, brings the characters to life with his witty choreography, complemented by the sublime score composed by Felix Mendelssohn.
The visual spectacle is further enhanced by Tracey Grant Lord’s shimmering sets and costumes, and Kendall Smith’s lighting designs, creating a truly immersive experience.
“I am thrilled to share this enchanting production, which blends design, dance, music, and humour, with our Brisbane audiences,” said Ms Benjamin.
