Queensland Ballet: Bespoke

QLD-Ballet-Bespoke-Jack-Lister-Mind-Your-Head-photo-by-David-KellyIt’s always exciting to see classically trained ballet dancers rise to the challenge of contemporary dance. This was the first performance I had attended of Bespoke – which is now in its fourth year of presentation.

The performance opened with Caravanserai which was choreographed by Head of the Academy Program, Paul Boyd. The students gracefully and tirelessly performed the seven movements in this exotic sequence.

Fallen was an intriguing performance with existential and romantic elements. It was choreographed by Queensland Ballet’s resident choreographer, Natalie Weir and performed by the dancers in the Jette Parker Young Artists Program.

Choreographed by Jack Lister, Mind Your Head was a fun-filled interpretation of retro American television wrestling. Complete with distinctive, colourful costumes, it was youthful and invigorating.

Jack Lister is an outstanding, young choreographer who has been with Queensland Ballet since 2014. The dancers gave a memorable, humerous performance.

The evening concluded with From. To. Here. which was choreographed by Rani Luther, Ballet Mistress and Creative Associate at Queensland Ballet.

Featuring some of Queensland Ballet’s leading artists, it was a grace-filled, soft conclusion to a pleasant night of contemporary dance.
