A heart-filled exploration of family, genius and mental illness, Freefall Productions in association with New Theatre presents David Auburn’s brilliant award-winning play, Proof from 13 July 2016.
Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father. When he dies she is left alone to pick up the pieces of her life without him. She may have inherited at least a part of her father’s genius – and perhaps some of his instability as well.
Caught between a new-found connection with Hal – one of her father’s former students who hopes to find some hint of genius in the 103 notebooks of incoherent scribblings Catherine’s father left behind – and the reappearance of her older sister Claire, Catherine’s world begins to close in as she is forced to question how much she can actually trust those closest to her.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Proof is David Auburn’s passionate and intelligent story about the uncompromising nature of genius and a family’s struggle to cope with the ongoing burden of mental illness.
First thrilling Sydney audiences in an STC production starring Jacqueline McKenzie and Barry Otto, Proof hit the screens in 2005 in a highly successful film adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal.
David Auburn is an American playwright, screenwriter, and director. In addition to proof, his works for theatre include: Are You Ready?, Damage Control, Fifth Planet, Miss You, Three Monologues, We Had A Very Good Time, What Do You Believe About The Future?, Skyscraper, The Columnist, and Lost Lake.
