A three act show about the best worst band of all time, The Shaggs, Melbourne Fringe presents IN BED WITH MY BROTHER’s Philosophy of The World at Festival Hub: Meat Market, North Melbourne, this October.
New Hampshire, 1940s. A boy receives a palm reading from a psychic. The prophecy is oddly specific: he will marry a strawberry-blonde woman, have two sons, and his daughters will form a world-famous rock band.
The first two come true. So he makes the third happen. Thus begins the extraordinary story of The Shaggs, the outsider band whose 1969 album Philosophy of the World was dismissed as one of the worst records ever made, only to become a cult classic and an unlikely touchstone of outsider music.
IN BED WITH MY BROTHER (Nora Alexander, Dora Lynn and Kat Cory) takes that peculiar slice of rock history and tears it apart.
Part tribute act, part feminist reclamation and part unruly theatrical experiment, PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD asks who gets to decide whether someone is a legend or a loser. Who owns a story? Who controls the rights to a life? And what happens when family, fame and artistic legacy collide?
The Shaggs’ story is also a story about fathers, daughters and the often uncomfortable space between encouragement and control. Their music may have been ridiculed, but the mythology surrounding them has endured precisely because it refuses easy categorisation.
With questionable mime, high-intensity dance, awkward crowd work, stage combat, cheap wigs, jump scares and plenty of philosophising, IN BED WITH MY BROTHER embraces the messy spirit of its subject. Because perhaps the real question isn’t whether The Shaggs were good or bad. It is who gets to decide?
