Orchestra Victoria is proud to announce its Season 2025 – marking the first program announcement in over a decade.
This milestone season will feature the acclaimed Southbank Series, the launch of a fresh concert concept at the orchestra’s new home in the iconic Meat Market, and a unique collaboration with culinary icon Maggie Beer for Arts Centre Melbourne’s Morning Melodies series.
Under the direction of Jessica Gethin, Artistic Advisor, who marks six months in the role, the season brings a bold and vibrant vision, highlighting the orchestra’s versatility and broadening its engagement with audiences.
As a cornerstone of Victoria’s performing arts landscape, Orchestra Victoria proudly continues its celebrated role as the performance partner of The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia and Victorian Opera in 2025.
These long-standing collaborations have been instrumental in shaping the Orchestras identity, and this season will further enhance the artistry and excellence that audiences have come to expect.
Whether breathing life into world-class productions or pioneering new musical experiences, the orchestra remains committed to embodying the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defines its future.
“When I began my role earlier this year, one of my key priorities was to reintroduce a full concert season that not only celebrates the incredible work our musicians do but also highlights our broader contributions to the arts in Victoria,” said Jessica Gethin, Artistic Advisor of Orchestra Victoria.
“We have an outstanding reputation for our work in the pit, but our impact extends far beyond that. Season 2025 is about bringing all that we do to a wider audience.”
At the heart of the season is the acclaimed Southbank Series featuring three concerts scheduled at The University of Melbourne’s Hanson Dyer Hall in March, July and September.
Audiences can expect a captivating repertoire, including stand out works such as Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3 and Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony. Leading Australian voices are also a strong presence, with works by William Barton, Joe Chindamo, and Elena Kats-Chenin appearing throughout the program.
Additionally, the Orchestra’s Principal musicians will also take centre stage, with Paul Champion, Mark Fitzpatrick, and Melissa Chominsky each performing concertos. Concertmaster Sulki Yu will lead the orchestra, bringing her renowned artistry to Orchestra Victoria’s performances.
Orchestra Victoria is thrilled to also announce its move to the Meat Market in North Melbourne, the orchestra’s vibrant new home. This relocation marks an exciting new chapter, providing a unique space for deeper connections with audiences.
To kick off this fresh beginning, Meet @ The Market will feature a series of dynamic, one-hour performances that promise an immersive experience with captivating lighting and an engaging atmosphere.
These lively concerts will showcase selections from the Southbank Series, inviting audiences to enjoy delicious food and drinks while mingling with musicians after the show. With its rich history and contemporary flair, the Meat Market is the perfect venue for a spellbinding night out.
“Moving into the Meat Market is an incredible opportunity for us. This iconic venue allows us to create a more accessible concert experience, making it easier for all kinds of audiences whether long-time fans or newcomers to connect with our music in a vibrant, social setting,” said Gethin.
A highlight of Orchestra Victoria’s collaborations for 2025, is with culinary legend Maggie Beer for Morning Melodies at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne in June. As one of Australia’s most beloved culinary icons, Maggie Beer needs little introduction.
Her cookbooks, television programs and produce have brought joy to millions across the country. Beyond her passion for food, music has been a lifelong source of inspiration for Maggie. An opera lover, regular concertgoer and member of a choir, she has always found ways to weave music into her daily life.
For this special Morning Melodies performance, Maggie will join Orchestra Victoria to present a selection of handpicked musical pieces that hold deep personal significance. The performance will feature live storytelling as Maggie shares the stories behind each piece and the role music has played throughout her life.
This event is just one highlight of the season, with more exciting collaborations and regional activities still to be announced, as the orchestra continues to explore new ways to engage with Victoria’s community and share the joy of music.
“Since stepping into this role, one phrase has resonated with me: Orchestra Victoria deserves to be seen and heard, not just in the pit but on stages across the state,” said Gethin.
“Our musicians bring extraordinary talent and passion to every performance, and season and Season 2025 is just the beginning of reinvigorating our visibility and our connection with both existing and new audiences.”
